Zhu Yuanzhang, posthumously known as the Hongwu Emperor, was the founder and first emperor of the Ming dynasty of China. Born into a peasant family in 1328, his early life was marked by poverty and hardship, including the death of his parents and siblings during a famine.
He joined a Buddhist monastery to survive but left to become a leader in the Red Turban Rebellion, a peasant uprising against the Yuan dynasty. Through military prowess and strategic alliances, he rose through the ranks, eventually leading the rebels to victory and capturing Nanjing, which he established as his base.
In 1368, after solidifying his power, Zhu Yuanzhang declared himself emperor, establishing the Ming dynasty. He implemented significant reforms, including land redistribution, tax reductions, and the strengthening of the military. His reign was characterized by both effective governance and autocratic tendencies, including purges of officials suspected of disloyalty. He died in 1398, leaving a legacy as a transformative figure in Chinese history.
